Wood Preservation Methods

The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. Wood technology is now the way the tools are utilized in the processes of wood preservation. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. Wood has many advantages and this technology takes the advantages and utilizes them. Wood can be applied in very many applications, and this gives it an upper hand over other materials. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.

For your wooden products and house to stay for long and have a good appearance it needs to be protected. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The moisture courses the timber to decay and the insects eat through the wood. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. As the name implies the preservative is made of copper products. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The concentration of the chemical that will be used to treat a piece of wood will depend on the where it is going to be used and the molecular structure of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

Many methods are being invented to protect the wood, and one of them is the copper metal method. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The timber treated in this way is used in both outdoor and indoor frames that last very long.

The micronized copper preservative has proven to be highly effective in protecting the wood against fungal decay and termites. It is not corrosive to metals used in together with the product. The wood treated using this method last longer and is stronger.
